Education

My name is Derek Lutz and I am a recent graduate from Hamline University. At Hamline I studied Chemistry and Education and obtained my teaching license. I currently teach chemistry, physics, and astronomy at Eagle Ridge Academy.

Experience

Before graduating from Hamline, where I focused on chemistry and physics, I spent the past three summers teaching physics, engineering, and statistics to students. I have worked one-on-one with students and in small groups for years and have always focused on building a strong relationship built on trust. My biggest assets as a teacher is flexibility and communication. These are explicitly displayed by my way of being able to clearly explain a subject. And what if you don't understand something I said? No worries! I make sure to always explain something multiple different ways since I understand we all have different learning styles.

Hobbies

I grew up in a small town in northern Minnesota and I take any opportunity I have to go and relax in the beautiful woods or serene lakes. However, I have also enjoyed my 6 years of living in Saint Paul. While at Hamline I played on the tennis team for four years and am currently one of the assistant coaches for the men's and women's teams. When I'm not teaching I spend time with the people that are most important to me. That has led me to doing trivia teams with my brothers, softball, basketball, and flag football teams with friends, and often just hiking and exploring the trails and parks with the good people I know and love. I look forward to continuing to increase my knowledge by working with students who need help. After all, helping students is what I enjoy most. It is a great feeling to watch someone succeed and know you played a role. It has what has played a huge part in my life from when I was a lifeguard teaching swimming lessons at 16 or teaching high school science now.
