Experience
Whenever I teach or tutor, I must share my passion for mathematics and science. Math, physics, and chemistry are technical subjects and I believe that learning them is not unlike learning a foreign language. It's much easier to listen and read, and thinking you can sit in class, listen to an instructor, and not practice is the wrong approach. Speaking and writing, when learning a language, are essential, and are just as so for learning technical subjects. I therefore emphasize on regularly "speaking" the language so I can offer accurate feedback on how one is learning. I use this philosophy whether I teach chemistry, algebra, or calculus on any level. At Rice University, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and a PhD in biophysical chemistry while attending Stanford University. I have pursued technical subject matter in my advanced education, so I know what it is like to learn and speak the language. There are no shortcuts and science is not something you can passively learn. It takes a lot of diligence and participation in hands on activities. I now live in Saint Paul, Minnesota and enjoy building things with Legos (and playing with my own kids), woodworking, and homeschooling.
